What is low growth hormone?
Growth hormone (GH) is a vital hormone produced by the pituitary gland that stimulates growth, cell reproduction and regeneration. As we age, our bodies typically produce less growth hormone. Low growth hormone refers to growth hormone deficiency (GHD) - when the pituitary gland does not produce enough GH. This can happen at any age.
Symptoms of low GH may include:
- Decreased muscle mass and strength
- Increased body fat, especially around the waist
- Fatigue, low energy levels
- Thinning hair or hair loss
- Depression, emotional instability
-Poor concentration and memory
- Skin thinning, dry skin, wrinkles
Causes of GHD:
- Pituitary tumors
- Head trauma
- Genetic disorders
- Brain surgery or radiation therapy
- Long-term corticosteroid treatment
GHD can greatly impact one's quality of life. Thankfully there are ways to treat low GH:
- GH injections - Daily injections of synthetic human growth hormone can restore normal levels and reverse symptoms of GHD. However, treatment can be very expensive.
- Secretagogues - These oral medications stimulate the pituitary gland to produce more natural growth hormone. More affordable but may have side effects.
If you suspect low GH, consult an endocrinologist for blood tests. Treatment can relieve troublesome symptoms and help you feel healthy and energetic again!
